Folías y Canarios

Released in 1994 by the label Astrée Auvidis, Folías y Canarios represents a cornerstone project in the early music revival spearheaded by conductor and gambist Jordi Savall. The recording explores the evolution of the 'folía' and 'canario' dance forms, tracing their migration from the Iberian Peninsula to the New World. The album serves as a scholarly yet vital exploration of cross-cultural musical synthesis, documenting how indigenous and colonial rhythms intertwined during the Baroque era.

The album was produced as a showcase for Hespèrion XX, an ensemble Savall co-founded in 1974 to bring historical performance practice to a contemporary audience.
