Vandaag

Released in 2012 on Herman van Veen’s own Harlekijn label, Vandaag serves as a reflective addition to the prolific Dutch artist's extensive discography. Created during a period in which van Veen continued to balance his roles as a musician, writer, and theatrical performer, the album captures his characteristic blend of intimate storytelling and melodic chanson. It emerged from his long-standing artistic practice of documenting the human condition through song, maintaining the themes of introspection and gentle social observation that have defined his career since the late 1960s.

The album’s design and production reflect the minimalist aesthetic often favored by Harlekijn, prioritizing the warmth of van Veen’s vocal delivery and the nuances of the instrumental arrangements. The collection was received as a typical yet refined entry in his body of work, resonating with his established audience who value his blend of lightheartedness and underlying gravity. Like much of his late-career output, the album emphasizes longevity and the pursuit of artistic continuity over the trends of contemporary pop, serving as a testament to his enduring presence in the Low Countries' cultural landscape.
