Where it came from
Vincenzo Bellini composed I Capuleti e i Montecchi in 1830 for the La Fenice opera house, marking a return to the Shakespearean source material of Romeo and Juliet through the lens of Italian bel canto. This specific recording, featuring Beverly Sills and Janet Baker, was produced by EMI Classics in 1975 to capture the stylistic nuance required by Bellini’s long-breathed melodies and high-lying vocal lines.
The production brought together an international cast under the baton of Giuseppe Patanè, aiming to emphasize the dramatic interplay between the two leads. The recording was designed to showcase the refined technical capabilities of its principals, particularly the contrast between Sills’ flexible coloratura and Baker’s authoritative mezzo-soprano, and it remains a touchstone for listeners interested in the mid-20th-century revival of Bellini’s serious operas.
