Where it came from
Vincenzo Bellini composed I Capuleti e i Montecchi in 1830 during a period of intense artistic productivity, drawing upon the Romeo and Juliet tradition while emphasizing his signature bel canto melodic style. This particular 2009 recording emerged from a prestigious live production at the Vienna Konzerthaus, capturing a seminal moment for contemporary opera where two of the world's most prominent stars, Anna Netrebko and Elīna Garanča, united to perform the roles of Giulietta and Romeo.
Deutsche Grammophon released this recording to critical acclaim, highlighting the exceptional chemistry between Netrebko and Garanča. The performance is widely regarded by musicologists as a definitive modern interpretation of the work, praised for Fabio Luisi's nuanced conducting and the technical precision of the Wiener Singakademie. By casting a mezzo-soprano as Romeo, the production honors Bellini’s original intentions, providing a distinct sonic texture that defines this specific release in the label's extensive catalog.
