Where it came from
The Don Cossack Choir, founded by Serge Jaroff in the 1920s, became a global phenomenon for their preservation of Russian liturgical and folk music during the diaspora. This recording of 'Ochi Chernye' (Dark Eyes) captures the ensemble's signature disciplined yet emotive polyphonic style, which was highly acclaimed for bringing the richness of the Russian choral tradition to Western European and American audiences throughout the mid-20th century.
Released under the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, this disc represents the standard of excellence for choral arrangements of this quintessential Russian romance. The arrangement emphasizes the dramatic, sweeping dynamics for which Jaroff’s ensemble was famous, effectively translating the melancholic beauty of the original folk song into a polished, high-fidelity studio performance that remains a cornerstone of the label's historical international catalog.
