Jeff Carey Plays Matmos / Matmos Plays Jeff Carey

Released in 2015 by the label Multiple Tap, this collaborative CD explores the intersection of electronic improvisation and structured composition. The project brings together the experimental duo Matmos—known for their use of found sound and unconventional sampling—and Jeff Carey, an artist celebrated for his work with custom-built hardware and chaotic digital synthesis. The recording captures a cross-pollination of their respective aesthetics, resulting in a dialogue that oscillates between frantic electronic noise and intricate rhythmic patterns.

The album serves as a document of the artistic exchange between these entities, with each side of the disc dedicated to reinterpreting or interacting with the other's sonic material. The design reflects the collaborative and often clinical nature of their avant-garde approach, eschewing traditional pop presentation in favor of a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes the abstract qualities of the music. It remains a notable entry in the catalog of experimental electronic music, documenting a specific moment of technical experimentation within the mid-2010s noise and ambient scenes.
