Where it came from
Jolly Jive was originally released in 1984 as a studio album by Japanese jazz-fusion guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka. This 2013 edition serves as a high-fidelity reissue released by Universal Music, intended to preserve Takanaka's vibrant contribution to the City Pop and fusion movements of the early eighties. The album is widely recognized for its tropical, upbeat aesthetic and slick production, which mirrored the optimistic economic climate of Japan during the period.
The album's design and sound were heavily influenced by Takanaka's affinity for island aesthetics and high-energy jazz arrangements. By collaborating with a rotating cast of session musicians, Takanaka aimed to create a 'vacation' soundscape characterized by technical guitar proficiency and smooth melodic hooks. Upon its initial release and subsequent reissues, it has been lauded for its infectious energy and remains a foundational entry in the global resurgence of Japanese fusion from that era.
