Provenance

Where it came from

Jolly Jive was originally released in 1984 as a studio album by the celebrated Japanese jazz fusion guitarist Masayoshi Takanaka, capturing the vibrant and sun-drenched aesthetic that defined his peak commercial period in the 1980s. Known for his technical precision and his signature bright-toned guitar work, Takanaka utilized this record to lean further into the sophisticated, polished production styles of the era, blending fusion, pop, and tropical influences that earned him the moniker of the architect of the Japanese city pop sound.

The 2006 CD release represents part of the extensive reissue campaigns spearheaded by Kitty Records to preserve Takanaka's back catalog for new generations of listeners. By the mid-2000s, Takanaka’s legacy had been firmly established, and his work was experiencing a resurgence in critical interest as international audiences began to revisit the experimental and lushly produced sounds of Japanese jazz fusion. This reissue sought to provide high-fidelity accessibility to a record that remains a cornerstone of the artist's mid-career discography.
