Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2014 by Hörbuch Hamburg, this audio production serves as a multilingual, experimental adaptation of Walt Whitman's 'Children of Adam' poems from his seminal collection Leaves of Grass. The project was conceived by director and producer Kai Grehn, who sought to bridge the gap between 19th-century American transcendentalist poetry and the raw, visceral energy of modern rock-and-roll aesthetics. By pairing Whitman’s verses with the distinctive vocal delivery of Iggy Pop, the production aims to emphasize the erotic and vitalist themes inherent in the original text, stripping away the academic distance often associated with poetry readings.

The album is noted for its unconventional soundscape, which integrates spoken word performances with atmospheric, avant-garde musical arrangements. Kai Grehn’s approach was designed to highlight the modernity of Whitman’s voice, specifically focusing on the poet's celebration of the human body and existential interconnectedness. Upon its release, the work received critical attention for its bold juxtaposition of high-culture literary heritage and the punk ethos embodied by Pop, finding an audience among both literature enthusiasts and those interested in experimental spoken-word art.
