Where it came from
This release features archival recordings of King Frederik IX of Denmark, who was a passionate conductor throughout his life. Released by the Dacapo label in 2020, the compilation highlights his tenure conducting the Royal Danish Orchestra and the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. The recordings reflect his sincere devotion to the craft of conducting, a role he pursued with great seriousness despite his royal duties, often participating in rehearsals and performances when time allowed.
The project was curated to preserve a unique aspect of Danish cultural history, documenting the intersection of monarchy and music. The design and liner notes provide context regarding the King’s musical preferences and his reputation among the professional musicians he led. By archiving these specific performances, the label intended to offer a historical record of his interpretation of the standard orchestral repertoire, serving as both a biographical document and a preservation of mid-20th-century Danish orchestral sound.
