Where it came from
Released in 2017 by the Chicago-based gallery and label Corbett vs. Dempsey, King Alcohol (New Version) serves as a reimagining of Rüdiger Carl’s earlier exploration of avant-garde jazz and experimental music. The project reflects the ethos of the label, which often documents the intersection of visual art and improvised sound, providing a platform for seasoned European free jazz musicians to revisit their archives through a contemporary lens.
The album showcases Carl’s distinctive approach to the saxophone and accordion, characterized by a playful yet rigorous dedication to improvisation. The design and production reflect the label's commitment to high-fidelity aesthetic presentation, often pairing experimental compositions with stark, minimalist cover art that mirrors the challenging and cerebral nature of the music contained within. It was received by jazz critics as a nuanced study in tone and structure, solidifying Carl's reputation as a persistent innovator in the free jazz circuit.
