Where it came from
Released in 2001, this project serves as a tribute album where Brazilian musician Kininho Dornelles interprets the works of composer and singer Elton Saldanha. Born from the regional traditions of Rio Grande do Sul, the album acts as a bridge between the traditional nativista style, characterized by its deep connection to gaucho culture and folklore, and a more accessible, contemporary arrangement approach. The recording was independently produced, reflecting the common trend among regional Brazilian artists of the early 2000s to self-publish works that might otherwise be overlooked by major labels.
The album is centered on the songwriting of Elton Saldanha, a prominent figure in the music of Southern Brazil whose compositions often evoke rural life and regional identity. Kininho Dornelles aimed to reinvigorate these specific tracks by applying a polished, studio-oriented perspective to the inherently rustic material. While the album remains a niche collector's item within the context of Brazilian regional music, it is regarded by enthusiasts of the genre as a sincere effort to document and preserve the lyrical legacy of Saldanha's catalog.
