Les Oeuvres Pour Voix de Femmes

Released in 2013 by the French independent label Timpani, this collection of works for female voices by Florent Schmitt serves as a significant contribution to the rediscovery of the composer’s choral catalog. Schmitt, a central figure in French music during the early 20th century, often explored dense harmonic textures and romantic sensibilities that fell out of fashion post-World War II, making this release a vital document for those exploring the bridge between Impressionism and mid-century modernism.

The recording features the Chœur de Femmes Calliope, directed by Régine Théodoresco, an ensemble noted for their commitment to specialized and underrepresented vocal repertoire. The performance reflects a meticulous approach to Schmitt's complex vocal writing, aiming to capture the ethereal, often mystical atmosphere inherent in his settings. Upon its release, the disc was praised by classical music critics for its technical precision and its role in shedding light on a neglected corner of the French choral canon.
