Where it came from
Released in 2005, Let Us Be Jolly And Drown Melancholy! serves as the debut studio album from the Norwegian ensemble Storm Weather Shanty Choir. Formed in Haugesund, the group emerged from a local tradition of maritime music, seeking to revive and re-contextualize sea shanties for a modern audience. The album was produced under the band's own Storm Weather Productions imprint, reflecting their independent approach to preserving Nordic coastal culture.
The album is noted for its raw, choral arrangements that emphasize the communal nature of work songs. By stripping back instrumentation to focus on vocal harmonies and percussive foot-stomping, the group aimed to capture the authentic, rugged atmosphere of life at sea. Upon its release, the record was well-received within folk and maritime circles for its commitment to traditional arrangements while maintaining a sense of spirited, high-energy performance.
