Provenance

Where it came from

The Markus-Passion, attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, was released in 1987 by CBS as a significant contribution to the rediscovery of baroque and early classical choral works. Compiled and edited by Helmuth Rilling, this recording features the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the Bachcollegium Stuttgart, showcasing a period-informed approach that aimed to clarify the lineage of the passion tradition. It reflects the broader musicological interest of the 1980s in separating C.P.E. Bach's authentic contributions from those historically misattributed to his father, Johann Sebastian Bach.

The recording process was centered on the collaboration between Rilling and esteemed soloists including Peter Schreier and Andreas Schmidt, who were chosen for their mastery of the German vocal tradition. The design and production intent focused on structural clarity and emotional gravity, aiming to provide a definitive interpretation of a work that had spent centuries in relative obscurity. Upon its release, the performance was noted for its technical precision and its role in re-establishing C.P.E. Bach as a composer of profound liturgical weight in his own right.
