Provenance

Where it came from

The Markus-Passion, composed by Reinhard Keiser around 1715, represents a significant example of the Hamburg Passion oratorio tradition. During his tenure as the director of the Hamburg Opera, Keiser was a central figure in German music, and this work reflects the theatrical, expressive style that defined the era. By the time of this 1993 recording, the piece had long been overshadowed by Bach's monumental works, making this release a notable effort by the Christophorus label to revive interest in the North German Baroque repertoire.

This recording features the Parthenia Vocal and Parthenia Baroque ensembles under the direction of Christian Brembeck. The ensemble aimed to provide an informed, period-appropriate interpretation of Keiser’s score, focusing on the dramatic tension and rich melodic lines characteristic of his writing. The release was received as a scholarly contribution to the discography of the Baroque period, helping to broaden public appreciation for Keiser’s influence on his contemporaries, including the young Johann Sebastian Bach, who was known to study and perform Keiser's music.
