Provenance

Where it came from

The Markus-Passion, attributed to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, occupies a complex place in musicological history. Originally composed in 1786, the work long suffered from questions regarding its authorship, as it borrows significantly from works by J.S. Bach and others. It serves as a fascinating example of the late 18th-century practice of pastiche, where composers utilized established musical themes to construct new liturgical narratives during the transition from the Baroque to the Classical era.

This 2009 recording by the Knabenkantorei Basel and the ensemble Ad Fontes, directed by Beat Raaflaub, was released on the Ars Musici label to bring this historical curiosity to modern audiences. The performance emphasizes an historically informed approach, seeking to clarify the intricate vocal textures and orchestral arrangements that define the piece. Upon its release, it was noted for providing a clean, scholarly interpretation of a score that remains a subject of intrigue for specialists in the Bach family legacy.
