Where it came from
This 2011 release from Fresh Sound Records functions as a compilation, bringing together two of Carmen McRae’s mid-century studio albums: 1958's 'Carmen for Cool Ones' and 1957's 'Mad About the Man'. These albums emerged during the peak of McRae’s association with Decca Records, a period widely recognized for showcasing her sophisticated phrasing and ability to breathe new life into standard American songbook repertoire.
The reissue was produced by the Spanish label Fresh Sound, which specializes in archival jazz releases. The design choices for these compilations typically mirror the mid-century modern aesthetic of the original cover art, emphasizing the minimalist typography and portrait photography prevalent in late 1950s jazz marketing. Critics have historically lauded these sessions for capturing McRae at the height of her vocal prowess, blending jazz spontaneity with a refined, cabaret-influenced delivery.
