Where it came from
Released in 2014 under the Vega Musique label, this self-titled album serves as a definitive showcase for Matt Laurent, a performer long celebrated in the French-Canadian music scene for his versatility and vocal range. The record arrived during a period where Laurent was balancing his extensive theater and musical acting career with his solo musical aspirations, aiming to bridge the gap between pop-rock sensibilities and the polished production typical of the Quebecois music industry at the time.
The album was designed to highlight Laurent’s identity as a contemporary singer-songwriter, moving away from his previous roles in high-profile musical productions like Notre-Dame de Paris. The artistic direction leaned into a stripped-back, authentic aesthetic that favored vocal clarity and instrumental arrangements intended to reflect his live performance style. Critics and fans of his work welcomed the project as a sincere reflection of his personal artistic evolution, solidifying his presence as a distinct voice within the independent francophone music circuit.
