Where it came from
Released in 2015 on the boutique French label Artalinna, this recording represents a thematic bridge between the classical tradition of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the distinct, modern voice of Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera. The project was conceived as an exploration of the intimate relationship between piano repertoire and visual art, contextualizing the technical rigor of these compositions within the broader creative output of the mid-20th century.
The album features pianist Gabriel Urgell Reyes, who was tasked with navigating the stark stylistic contrast between Mozart’s structured classicism and Ginastera’s rhythmic, often percussive nationalist vernacular. The curation of the repertoire was intended to illuminate how Ginastera’s keyboard works draw from both ancestral folk motifs and modernist abstractions. Upon its release, the recording was noted by critics for its clean, high-fidelity production and for providing a focused look at Ginastera’s piano catalog, which is often overshadowed by his larger orchestral suites.
