O Poeta e o Esfomeado

Released in 2015 by the archival label Discobertas, O Poeta e o Esfomeado compiles rare recordings by Brazilian icons Jorge Mautner and Gilberto Gil. This collection serves as a historical document of their collaborative spirit, bringing together tracks that emerged from their long-standing creative partnership and mutual influence within the Tropicalismo movement. The release was curated to preserve these artifacts for a new generation, reflecting the experimental, poetic, and often irreverent nature of their work during the late 20th century.

The album reflects the distinct artistic sensibilities of Mautner’s lyrical complexity and Gil’s rhythmic innovation. Its design and selection were framed within the context of the Discobertas project, which focuses on documenting the essential catalogs of Brazilian popular music. The reception of this release has been largely positive among scholars and enthusiasts of MPB, who recognize the record as a vital piece of cultural heritage that highlights the improvisational chemistry between these two foundational figures of Brazilian music.
