Per Carlo Alberto Rossi

Released in 2003 on the Italian jazz label Philology, this album features the Renato Sellani Trio interpreting the songbook of composer Carlo Alberto Rossi. Sellani, a prominent figure in the Italian jazz scene known for his lyrical and sensitive pianistic style, chose to honor Rossi—a prolific songwriter whose work defined much of the Italian popular music landscape mid-century—by filtering these recognizable melodies through a sophisticated, improvisational jazz lens.

The album reflects the curatorial ethos of Philology Records, a label founded by Paolo Piangiarelli to document the depth of the Italian jazz tradition through dedicated tributes and archival recordings. The design and production are minimal, prioritizing the interplay between Sellani’s piano, the rhythmic support of his trio, and the melodic integrity of Rossi’s compositions, resulting in a project that serves as both a respectful homage to a classic songwriter and a showcase of Sellani's nuanced performance technique.
