I Wish I Knew

Released in 2005 on the Italian jazz label Philology, I Wish I Knew represents a sophisticated collaboration between veteran clarinetist Gianni Basso and the Renato Sellani Trio. The album emerged from the fertile Italian jazz scene of the early 2000s, where producer Secondo Casadei frequently facilitated sessions that paired legendary instrumentalists with established local rhythm sections. The project was conceived as a showcase for Basso's melodic clarity and his deep, lyrical command of the clarinet within a traditional jazz framework.

The album's design and arrangement reflect a focused intent to revisit the Great American Songbook through a restrained, chamber-jazz lens. By integrating the technical precision of bassist Massimo Moriconi and drummer Massimo Manzi with Sellani's pianistic sensitivity, the record sought to emphasize nuance over bravado. It was received by jazz critics as a refined late-career entry for Basso, praised for its atmospheric cohesion and the evident rapport between the ensemble members.
