Provenance

Where it came from

Perlen der Kleinkunst serves as a curated archival retrospective of the work of Ludwig Manfred Lommel, a prominent German cabaret artist and entertainer active during the early to mid-20th century. Released in 2004 by the label Documents, this compilation was produced as part of an effort to preserve the legacy of Weimar-era and post-war German variety performance, capturing the wit, linguistic playfulness, and observational humor that defined Lommel’s career.

The collection highlights Lommel’s unique contribution to the 'Kleinkunst' tradition, a genre characterized by intimate, sophisticated, and often satirical stage performances. By synthesizing his archived broadcasts and recordings, the release provides a window into the evolution of German radio comedy. It was received as a valuable educational and historical resource, ensuring that the nuances of his performance style remained accessible to a modern audience interested in the roots of German comedic culture.
