Where it came from
Released in 2000 on the Glossa label, this recording features the theorbo music of Robert de Visée, a composer and lutenist who served in the court of Louis XIV. The theorbo, a large plucked string instrument with extended bass strings, was a signature sound of the French Baroque era, and de Visée’s compositions are noted for their refined intimacy and harmonic sophistication.
The album is interpreted by José Miguel Moreno, a highly regarded specialist in historical plucked instruments. Moreno’s performance was designed to capture the delicate, introspective quality of the French courtly style. Upon its release, the recording was widely praised by music critics for its technical precision and the atmospheric, resonant clarity of the production, establishing it as a foundational reference for students of Baroque theorbo repertoire.
