Where it came from
This 1988 release by the label Pilz features performances of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Sleeping Beauty suite alongside Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmilla overture, performed by the New Philharmonia Orchestra. Emerging during the late 1980s, the Pilz label was a prominent budget-tier producer that sought to capitalize on the burgeoning compact disc market by reissuing and licensing high-quality orchestral recordings for a wider, more accessible audience.
The recording reflects the mid-century tradition of the New Philharmonia Orchestra, a successor to the Philharmonia Orchestra of London. These interpretations were selected for their technical precision and dramatic narrative flair, traits that have long defined the Romantic repertoire. As a budget-friendly CD, this release was intended to provide a straightforward, non-curated introduction to classic Russian orchestral works, finding its place in the collections of casual listeners and students of classical music during the format's formative years.
