Romeo Und Julia / Dornröschen / Schwanensee

Released in 1992 under the Music Digital label, this compact disc compilation features the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under the direction of conductor Peter Wohlert. The collection gathers excerpts from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most iconic ballet scores and tone poems, specifically Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. It was produced during an era when budget-conscious classical music labels were expanding their catalogs to reach wider audiences through accessible, mid-priced digital releases.

The production sought to provide a focused listening experience by highlighting the lyrical and dramatic themes of Tchaikovsky’s compositions. Peter Wohlert’s interpretation with the Berlin-based ensemble is characterized by a traditional approach to the Romantic repertoire, prioritizing melodic clarity and orchestral texture. While this release was marketed as a foundational recording for casual listeners rather than a definitive scholarly reference, it remains a representative example of the post-Cold War expansion of the European orchestral recording industry.
