Lore

Why it matters

This collection of symphonic works brings together two of the composer’s most evocative programmatic pieces alongside his final completed symphony. Pairing these compositions allows listeners to experience the transition from dramatic narrative storytelling to the profound, melancholic depth that defines his most celebrated orchestral achievement.

Provenance

Where it came from

This release is part of a budget-conscious series issued by the German label Pilz in the early 1990s. During this period, the classical music industry saw an influx of inexpensive CDs aimed at mass-market retailers, often utilizing licensed recordings from Eastern European orchestras to fill a growing demand for accessible digital-format classical music.

The disc pairs Tchaikovsky’s dramatic tone poem Romeo and Juliet with his final symphony, the Pathétique. Like many releases from the Pilz catalog, it favors functional design and standard performance interpretations typical of the era's mid-price market, prioritizing affordability and thematic coupling over scholarly annotations or premium packaging.
