Where it came from
Runo X, released in 2017, represents a significant entry in the discography of the Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila. Recorded at a time when Tuomarila was further establishing his voice within the contemporary European jazz scene, the album serves as a vehicle for his intricate compositions, which often balance Nordic lyricism with the propulsive, modern rhythmic structures characteristic of his quartet work.
The quartet, featuring Verneri Pohjola on trumpet, Mats Eilertsen on bass, and Olavi Louhivuori on drums, brings a collaborative synergy to the record that reflects years of shared performance. The design and sonic direction of the album were intended to showcase a blend of atmospheric spaciousness and technically demanding improvisation, earning praise from jazz critics for its cohesive group interaction and its contribution to the ECM-adjacent aesthetic common in modern Finnish jazz.
