Where it came from
Released in 2021 by OA2 Records, Rust Belt Roots serves as a focused tribute to the lineage of jazz guitar giants who emerged from the Midwestern United States. Randy Napoleon, a seasoned guitarist and educator known for his lyrical style and precise articulation, crafted this album to explore the distinct musical dialects of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, and Kenny Burrell. The project highlights how these three legends shaped the modern jazz guitar canon through their unique approaches to swing, blues, and melodic improvisation.
The album reflects Napoleon’s deep-seated respect for the 'Detroit sound' and the broader stylistic heritage of the Rust Belt region, which has historically been a wellspring for jazz guitar innovation. By selecting a repertoire that emphasizes the soul-jazz and bop traditions associated with his subjects, Napoleon aimed to bridge the gap between historical reverence and contemporary execution. Critics noted the record for its warm, unadorned production, which captures the nuance of his picking technique while maintaining the classic, clean tone characteristic of the jazz guitar tradition.
