Provenance

Where it came from

The Dream of Gerontius, completed in 1900, stands as Sir Edward Elgar's magnum opus and a cornerstone of the English choral repertoire. Based on the poem by Cardinal John Henry Newman, the work explores the soul’s journey through death and judgment, reflecting Elgar’s deeply personal spiritual struggle. It was commissioned for the Birmingham Music Festival, though its premiere was marred by inadequate rehearsal time, leading to a lukewarm initial reception that belied the technical complexity and emotional intensity of the score.

This specific recording, featuring Sir John Barbirolli conducting the Hallé Orchestra and a definitive performance by mezzo-soprano Dame Janet Baker, is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative interpretations in the recording canon. Barbirolli, a champion of Elgar’s music, was praised for his ability to elicit a blend of profound intimacy and sweeping grandeur from the ensemble. The recording has been reissued multiple times by Warner Classics, consistently lauded by critics for the clarity of the choral textures and Baker’s transcendent portrayal of the Angel.
