Where it came from
Recorded in 1964 and 1965 at Abbey Road Studios and Kingsway Hall, this landmark EMI release features Sir John Barbirolli conducting Elgar's profound oratorio The Dream of Gerontius alongside his orchestral song cycle Sea Pictures. Barbirolli, a lifelong champion of Elgar's music, sought to capture the intense spirituality and emotional landscape of Newman's poem, utilizing the mezzo-soprano Janet Baker in what is widely considered one of her most definitive recorded performances.
The production brought together a massive ensemble of choirs and the Hallé and London Symphony Orchestras to realize Elgar's complex, symphonic vision. Upon release, the set was met with immediate critical acclaim for its idiomatic sensitivity and the seamless integration of Baker’s vocal authority with Barbirolli’s nuanced, expansive conducting style. It remains a staple of the British classical catalog and a primary reference point for Elgar’s vocal works.
