Provenance

Where it came from

This 2007 EMI Classics release gathers two pillars of English choral music, Sir Edward Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius and The Music Makers, in a definitive retrospective collection. The Dream of Gerontius, composed in 1900, is considered Elgar's masterpiece, setting Cardinal Newman's poem to music that captures the soul's passage after death. It emerged during a period of transition in British music, bridging Victorian oratorio traditions with a new, deeply personal Romantic intensity that initially faced challenges during its premiere due to its complexity and theological weight.

The performances featured in this set represent the benchmark recordings conducted by Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Adrian Boult, both of whom were instrumental in refining the Elgar canon in the mid-20th century. By pairing these works with the Hallé Orchestra and London Philharmonic, EMI sought to preserve the idiomatic authority of mid-century British conducting. These recordings are celebrated for their emotional gravity and technical precision, long considered the standard against which modern interpretations are measured, and this 2007 compilation served to keep these vital historical performances accessible to a new generation of listeners.
