The Palomar Trio - The Song In Our Soul

Released in 2023 by Turtle Bay Records, The Song In Our Soul serves as a focused showcase for The Palomar Trio, a group formed by reed player Dan Levinson, pianist Mark Shane, and drummer Kevin Dorn. The trio is rooted in the tradition of early 20th-century jazz and swing, specifically seeking to channel the intimate, interplay-heavy aesthetics of small-group jazz from the 1920s and 1930s. The recording project was conceived to highlight the technical proficiency and stylistic versatility of these three musicians, who are established figures in the New York City traditional jazz scene.

The album's design and arrangement reflect a commitment to historical authenticity, prioritizing acoustic clarity and a vintage sonic palette that honors the compositions of the Great American Songbook. Levinson, who is well-regarded for his research into jazz history and his work with various big bands and ensembles, approached the production with the intent of recreating the organic, conversational dynamic of pre-bop jazz. The release was received within the traditional jazz community as a respectful and skillfully executed entry into the small-group repertoire, valued for its faithful adherence to classic rhythmic foundations and melodic improvisation.
