Where it came from
The Singers: Jennie Tourel was released in 2001 as part of a reissue series by Decca dedicated to preserving the legacies of preeminent classical vocalists of the twentieth century. This compilation serves as a curated retrospective of Tourel’s operatic and recital repertoire, intended to introduce her distinctive mezzo-soprano agility to a new generation of listeners during a period when the label was actively digitizing its extensive historical archives.
Jennie Tourel was widely celebrated for her intelligence, vocal precision, and her mastery of both French mélodie and Russian art songs. The collection highlights the meticulous phrasing and technical refinement that defined her career, often capturing performances that underscored her long-standing collaborative relationship with figures like Leonard Bernstein. Critically, the release was received as a necessary archival tribute to a performer whose influence on vocal pedagogy and interpretation remained profound long after her active stage career concluded.
