Provenance

Where it came from

The Virginia & West Virginia Box - 1950s & 1960s Oddball Labels was released in 2022 by the archival label Be! Sharp Records, an imprint dedicated to preserving obscure regional music history. This collection serves as a curated retrospective of independent record labels operating within the Appalachian region during the mid-twentieth century, focusing on the idiosyncratic sounds that existed outside of the mainstream country and bluegrass circuits of the era.

The box set was compiled to showcase the sonic diversity of the region, ranging from primitive rockabilly and gospel to localized country novelties. By gathering these rare 45s and regional pressings, the producers aimed to provide a scholarly look at the 'oddball' aesthetic of home-grown musical production. It has been received by music historians as a vital, high-fidelity preservation effort that honors the grassroots creative efforts of independent musicians who rarely saw distribution beyond their own local communities.
