Where it came from
Released under the Columns Classics label, this collection highlights the virtuosic repertoire for the clarinet during the 19th century. The album brings together works by foundational Romantic composers including Carl Maria von Weber, Bernhard Henrik Crusell, and Louis Spohr, reflecting the era's fascination with the technical capabilities and expressive range of the instrument. These pieces were historically crafted to showcase the brilliance of professional soloists, often pushing the boundaries of contemporary woodwind performance.
The recording features the artistry of Henk de Graaf, accompanied by the Schubert Consort Netherlands. The project sought to offer a refined interpretation of the classical woodwind canon, focusing on a clean, chamber-focused sound. It serves as a pedagogical and performative touchstone for listeners interested in the evolution of clarinet literature, capturing the nuanced interplay between the soloist and the supporting ensemble in a traditional recital setting.
