Violin Concerto

Théodore Dubois was a prominent figure in French late-Romantic music, serving as the director of the Paris Conservatoire and a successor to Delibes. His Violin Concerto, composed in the late 19th century, reflects the formal elegance and melodic warmth characteristic of the French school during that era. While Dubois was once a central authority in French musical life, his work eventually fell into relative obscurity as musical styles shifted toward the modernism of the early 20th century.

This 2018 recording on the German label cpo features violinist Ingolf Turban and the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern under the direction of Raoul Grüneis. The release is part of a broader effort by cpo to champion lesser-known orchestral works from the Romantic period, bringing long-neglected scores to contemporary audiences with high-fidelity production values. Turban’s interpretation was noted by critics for its technical precision and sympathetic approach to Dubois's distinct, late-Romantic lyricism.
