Provenance

Where it came from

This 2010 recording of Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera Dornröschen, released by the German label cpo, serves as a significant modern revival of a work that largely faded from the repertoire after its 1902 premiere in Frankfurt. Humperdinck, best known for his operatic adaptation of Hansel and Gretel, composed this fairy-tale work toward the end of his career, infusing it with his characteristic late-Romantic orchestral lushness and Wagnerian structural influences. The project was conceived as part of an ongoing initiative to document and preserve lesser-known German operatic works from the turn of the century.

The recording features the Münchner Rundfunkorchester under the direction of Ulf Schirmer, alongside a cast including Brigitte Fassbaender and Kristiane Kaiser. In their production, the ensemble sought to highlight the sophisticated, shimmering orchestration Humperdinck employed to depict the magical atmosphere of the Sleeping Beauty narrative. Upon its release, the recording was praised by music critics for its technical clarity and for providing a comprehensive, high-quality audio documentation of a score that had remained unavailable to contemporary audiences for decades.
