Waldstein • Hammerklavier

Released in 2020 by the French label La Dolce Volta, this recording features the pianist Théo Fouchenneret performing two of Ludwig van Beethoven's most technically and emotionally demanding piano sonatas: the Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53, known as the Waldstein, and the Sonata No. 29 in B-flat major, Op. 106, the Hammerklavier. These works represent the bridge between Beethoven's middle and late periods, pushing the boundaries of the piano sonata form through expanded length, harmonic complexity, and structural innovation.

The album serves as a showcase for Fouchenneret's nuanced approach to the repertoire, emphasizing a clarity of tone that navigates the dense textures of the Hammerklavier while capturing the bright, virtuosic character of the Waldstein. La Dolce Volta, known for its high production values and distinct, often minimalist aesthetic in physical media, positioned this release as a significant contribution to the extensive catalog of Beethoven recordings. Critics noted the performance for its structural integrity and the deliberate, inquisitive temperament that Fouchenneret brings to these cornerstone pieces of Western classical music.
