Where it came from
The 2017 Canadian one-cent coin, featuring the 'L'hirondelle' or barn swallow design, was produced to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. As the Royal Canadian Mint had officially discontinued the production of the one-cent piece for circulation in 2012, this specific issue was minted as a special collector's edition rather than a functional piece of currency.
The reverse design was created by artist Wesley Klassen, whose work depicts a barn swallow in mid-flight to represent the Canadian spirit of freedom and connection to the landscape. The coin serves as a nostalgic tribute to the iconic penny, which had been a staple of Canadian coinage since the country's inception until its withdrawal five years prior.
