1 Cent - Elizabeth II (New Brunswick)

The 2018 Canadian one-cent piece featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II belongs to the long-standing tradition of Canadian decimal coinage, though it serves as a commemorative or legacy issue. By 2018, the physical one-cent coin had been removed from active circulation in Canada for several years, with production ceasing in 2012 due to the high cost of manufacturing relative to its face value. This specific version was produced by the Royal Canadian Mint as part of special numismatic sets for collectors who maintain an interest in the country's currency history.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Susanna Blunt, which has been used on Canadian coinage since 2003. This design depicts the Queen in a contemporary style, notably without a crown, reflecting a shift toward a more modern and simplified aesthetic for Commonwealth portraiture. The reverse maintains the classic maple leaf design, a symbol synonymous with Canadian national identity, ensuring that even in its post-circulation status, the coin remains a recognizable piece of numismatic heritage.
