Where it came from
The 2018 Nova Scotia one-cent coin is part of the Royal Canadian Mint's ongoing commemorative series honoring the provinces and territories. While Canada officially discontinued the production of the one-cent piece for circulation in 2012, the Mint continues to issue limited-edition collector versions that celebrate the heraldic and historical symbols of the nation's provinces.
This specific design features the heraldic provincial badge of Nova Scotia, which centers on the shield of the provincial coat of arms. The design reflects a long tradition of Canadian numismatic artistry, emphasizing the historical connection between the province and the British monarchy, as represented by the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. These issues are widely regarded as tributes to Canadian heritage rather than functional currency.
