Where it came from
The 2017 Canadian 5-cent coin featuring the 'Le lapin' or rabbit design was issued as part of the 150th anniversary of Confederation series. The Royal Canadian Mint invited public submissions for new reverse designs to commemorate the milestone, resulting in artist Gerald Gloade winning the category for the nickel with his depiction of a snowshoe hare.
Gloade, a member of the Millbrook First Nation in Nova Scotia, intended for the design to celebrate the natural environment of Canada through the lens of Indigenous artistry. His work features the rabbit as a significant figure in Mi'kmaq legend, and the stylized aesthetic was crafted to reflect traditional woodcut imagery. The coin was widely circulated during 2017 and was generally well-received for its cultural significance and its departure from the standard beaver design.
