Where it came from
The Canadian five-cent coin, colloquially known as the beaver nickel, traces its iconic reverse design back to 1937. It was commissioned by the Royal Canadian Mint to reflect Canadian wildlife and heritage, featuring a beaver perched on a log as conceptualized by sculptor G.E. Kruger-Gray. This design replaced the previous heraldic themes and has remained a staple of Canadian currency for decades, symbolizing industry and the nation's historical connection to the fur trade.
The 2016 iteration of this coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, designed by artist Susanna Blunt. Introduced in 2003, Blunt’s portrait depicts the Queen without a crown, opting for a modern, approachable aesthetic that signifies the changing role of the monarchy in contemporary society. By 2016, these coins were widely circulated, serving as a functional piece of daily commerce while maintaining the long-standing tradition of Canadian numismatic iconography.
