Where it came from
This 2015 Canadian five-cent coin was issued as part of a commemorative series celebrating the 70th anniversary of the 1945 Victory Nickel. The original 1945 design, created by artist Thomas Shingles, featured a triumphant 'V' for Victory that doubled as the Roman numeral five, incorporating a torch and a morse code message reading 'We win as one, we serve together' around the rim.
The 2015 version faithfully reproduces the historic design, serving as a nostalgic tribute to the end of the Second World War. While standard Canadian nickels of this era typically feature the beaver design by G.E. Kruger-Gray, this specific issue was released to honor Canada's contribution to the Allied victory, highlighting the enduring significance of the V-for-Victory motif in Canadian numismatic history.
