Where it came from
This 2002 Isle of Man crown was issued to commemorate the FIFA World Cup hosted jointly by Japan and South Korea. Like many commemorative coins from the Isle of Man, this piece serves as both a currency denomination and a collectible souvenir, highlighting the island's tradition of marking major global sporting events through numismatic releases that appeal to international audiences.
The coin features a dynamic design of a footballer in mid-stride on the reverse, capturing the energy of the sport, paired with the standard effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. Struck in a silver proof finish, the piece reflects the high-polish aesthetic preferred by collectors during this era. Its design was overseen by the Pobjoy Mint, a private mint historically responsible for the majority of the Isle of Man's coinage, which is noted for its ability to produce highly detailed, commemorative-focused issues for the collector market.
