1 Crown - François d'Alençon, Brabant Revolt

The 1582 crown featuring François, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, was minted during the height of the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule. Following the Act of Abjuration in 1581, the States-General of the Netherlands formally renounced Philip II of Spain and sought a new sovereign. François was invited to become the Duke of Brabant and Count of Flanders, marking a pivotal moment where the rebellious provinces attempted to legitimize their independence through the appointment of a foreign monarch.

Designed to solidify François's authority in the Low Countries, the coinage depicts him in the tradition of Renaissance portraiture, emphasizing his status as the newly appointed sovereign. However, the design proved premature, as his actual power remained severely restricted by the States-General and his reign was marred by political mistrust. The short-lived nature of his rule, ending effectively with the disastrous 'French Fury' in 1583, makes these coins rare historical artifacts of a failed political experiment during the formation of the Dutch Republic.
