Where it came from
The 2009 Australian Citizenship 1 Dollar proof coin was minted by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Australian Citizenship Act 1948. This legislation was a landmark moment in Australian history, as it established a distinct Australian citizenship for the first time, separate from the status of British subject, reflecting the nation's growing sense of sovereign identity in the post-war era.
The coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, a standard portrait used on Australian currency during this period. The reverse design, crafted by the Royal Australian Mint's design team, incorporates symbolic imagery related to the citizenship ceremony, such as the Commonwealth Coat of Arms and the Australian wattle. As a silver proof issue, it was produced with a high-quality polished finish intended specifically for the numismatic collector market, celebrating the shared values and inclusive nature of the Australian community.
