Where it came from
This 2016 Australian one-dollar silver bullion coin was minted by the Perth Mint as part of its long-running Australian Lunar Series II. It was issued to celebrate the Year of the Monkey, the ninth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle, which holds significant cultural importance for the Australian bullion market and its proximity to Asian trade partners. The coin is struck from one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, designed primarily for investors and collectors of precious metals who value the series for its consistent artistic evolution.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, a depiction that has become iconic on Commonwealth coinage since its introduction in 1998. The reverse design showcases a monkey resting on a peach tree branch, a motif chosen to symbolize longevity and good fortune in traditional Chinese iconography. Upon its release, the coin was well received for its high-quality finish and the precise, detailed engraving work characteristic of the Perth Mint, solidifying its place as a reliable staple within global numismatic collections.
